Obituary for Philip John Sikkema

Philip John Sikkema, age 75, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 20, 2020. There he was met by a host of loved ones, including his brother Carl Sikkema, and brother-in-law Roger VerHage, both recently deceased, along with granddaughter Haddie and other precious grandchildren. We are sure they ate dessert first at this joyous celebration!

Phil served in the US Army, 82nd Airborne Division, being named paratrooper of the year, then came home to marry his sweetheart, Joan Holwerda, a union that stood 51 blessed years. He and Joan’s family life included raising three wonderful children. His working career included 9 years as a Grand Rapids police officer, 25 years at Steelcase, and 6 years for Johnson Controls.

He and Joan attended Resurrection Life Church in Grandville, where he served as a deacon and Healing Rooms director, offered financial and marriage counseling, and also served the public as a precinct delegate. To his family, he was a loving husband, greatest of fathers, and proud grandfather, famous for saying, “Do you know what I love about you? …Everything!”

Phil ran his race well and now has entered into his reward. Awaiting their reunion with him are his wife, Joan Sikkema, son, Michael Sikkema (wife Cher), daughter, Cathy Mulder (husband Quentin), daughter, Linda VanTil (husband Todd), grandchildren, Kassie, Jilly, Katie, Colton, Rees, Grant, Davis, Allyson, Evelyn, and Jared, three great-granddaughters, brother, Ron Sikkema (wife Phyllis), and sister, Ethel Azariah.

A private family gathering will be held, and a celebration of life with family and friends will be scheduled for a later date.
