On Saturday, November 9, 2019 Julius Gal passed peacefully at the age of 92. Preceded in death by his (step)daughter Gayle Sharpe, he leaves behind his wife of 47 years, Jean Gal, Son-In-Law Casey Sharpe, friends and neighbors.
Julius was born in Hungary on July 18, 1927.
He spent almost 2 decades in the Hungarian Army as a mechanic, and immigrated to the United States in 1955.
Julius became a photographer for Holland Litho where he spent close to 30 years. He was a talented craftsman with an eye for incredible detail. He taught himself to build and finish furniture, and to cut and polish stones for jewelry.
He and Jean shared a love for rocks and gems. In fact, they met in a Grand Rapids rock shop and married shortly after. They shared many adventures with their daughter Gayle, searching the shores of Lake Superior for agates.
The place he spent most of his time, though, was his garden. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, raspberries, pears, hazelnuts, quince fruit, grapes, cherries were all grown under his watchful eye, even starting many from heirloom seed in his basement.
Julius and Jean took great care in preserving their produce to eat the rest of the year. You could find them busily canning tomato sauce, raspberry jam, Hungarian salad, pickles and beans in the summer.
He took great pride in helping Jean refine his favorite Hungarian recipes and loved to share their baked goods with friends and neighbors.
His life story is that of overcoming hardship. He was thankful for this country with the shelter and opportunities it provided.
Jean will remember him as a loving husband.
