Obituary

James Harold McFarlane of Grand Rapids, MI was born January 24, 1960 and died peacefully September 10, 2020 after only a 6-week fight with cancer.

Jim was the youngest of 5 siblings. He left behind his sister, Kathy McFarlane Draper, and several nieces and nephews. He wanted to go home from the hospital to die, but sadly was only home for one day.

He was a good man who respected woman, the elderly and veterans. He was a Christian who ended every conversation with "God Bless You." He loved to dance and sing and even competed in a Michael Jackson dance contest (may have been the only white boy there.) Motown music was his choice of music. Diana Ross and Michael Jackson were his favs. He saw them both in concert numerous times. With all that dancing he always had a coke in his hand.

His favorite holidays were Christmas, where he was like a little boy when it came to presents, and Halloween, where he could dress up in costumes. Jimmy loved him some Barbies, Beanie Babies, Pez dispensers, happy meals, super heroes, etc. etc.. He had been a toy collector for most of his life. His whole life was in service to others, a very unselfish soul. He was pro Trump (can't beat him up now) and loved cats (had to be Siamese.) He had a fabulous memory remembering things that happened 55 years ago.

He struggled most of his life. Just as things started looking up, cancer came in and took him. He didn't have money, insurance or time to prepare. Please donate to his Go Fund Me page.

The family would like to thank everyone who showed compassion, help and care for Jim during his illness. A Celebration of Life will be held at Riverside Park Pavilion on Sept. 26 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

I live at Marsh Ridge and only knew Jimmy for about a year. He definitely was one of a kind. Happy, always smiling. Would do anything for you. We would sit and talk for hours. Really going to miss him. Rest in peace Jimmy.

I will miss Jim. He was more than a cousin, He was like a brother. My Best Friend. He treated me like a Queen. Everyday there is something that happens that reminds me of him. You will never be forgotten.

Jimmy was my best friend for many years. He was a loyal friend; the best I’ve ever known. He was a good man who loved his family fiercely and his friends forever. He was the epitome of a gentleman, loved a good debate, and was absolute in his unselfishness. Though he was a Coca-Cola nut, he would share his soda even if he only had one during rough times. He stood behind his words and actions and tried to exhibit integrity in living his life. Jimmy was there for everybody, and I know his impact on others will bring about many tears and laughter, such as was his life. Jimmy had just reminded me that Fall was his favorite season. While a myriad of memories flood my mind, some of my fondest are taking Fall walks, where we would say the leaves looked like confetti, rustling down the street as if late for a party, swirling all around us. Jimmy would always yell, “Wait for us! Where’s the party?” Well, Jimmy, you made it to the Big Party, and I know you’re dancing in the sky. You will live in my heart forever and I can’t wait to see you again. I’ll finally say “yes” to that dance.
