Obituary

Barbara Jean (Wetherbee) Claxton, age 89, of Sparta, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of December 14, 2020 with family near her bedside. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Audra Wetherbee, and her adoring husband of over 63 years, Wendell Lloyd Claxton.
Barb is survived by three sons and two daughters: Brian Claxton (Mary Pugh) of Denver, Co; Roxanne Claxton of Hudsonville; Greg (Pamela) Claxton of Wyoming; Dan (Mary) Claxton of Walker; and Angela (Steve) Shamery of Hudsonville; two foreign exchange children: Susana Iglesias of Uruguay and Hans-Peter Barz of Germany; 14 grandchildren plus spouses/significant others: Douglas (Lindsay) Claxton, Arne (Erin) Claxton, David (Amie) Brock, Shelley Brock (Will Hovarter), Samantha (Dave) Hodge, Kendra Claxton, Kevin (Megan) Claxton, Corey Claxton, Beth Clay, Jordyn (Austin) Hazelrig, Mitchell Burgess, Taylor (Andrew) Krebill, Travis (Kaitlyn) Shamery and Spencer (Anna) Shamery; eleven great-grandchildren with two more on the way: Brooke, Kendall, Harlow, Olivia, Braeden, Colin, Graham, Lila, Makenzie, Carys and Leif; one sister and two brothers: June Florinchi, Wally (Theresa) Wetherbee, John (Nancy) Wetherbee; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Barb was passionate first and foremost about caring for her family. Without a doubt Acts of Service was her expressed Love Language by being heavily involved in her kids activities, keeping a clean house, cooking great meals and throwing great gatherings without asking for help. She was well known around town for her bread making which was often suggested she sell it nationwide.
Barb was passionate about sports watching. She kept busy during quarantine times by watching reruns of old football and basketball games as if it were the first time played. Her true love for sports teams was for the MSU Spartans. She didn’t hesitate to spar with any fan of the opposing rival – you know who you are (and are loved regardless)!
Barb loved playing games – especially the card games of bridge and euchre. She was a competitive card player – and was wicked smart on the rules. She greatly missed playing bridge with her group at Walker Ice Arena during the shutdown.
Barb always signed off as Mom “C”, Gma “C” or Barb “C” in case distinguishment was needed from the other moms, grandmas or Barb’s! She also signed off many of her messages with multiple “bye”. It is fitting to say bye, bye, bye Mom “C”, Gma “C”, Barb “C”. You were loved and will be dearly missed!
Family would like to thank the staff at Legacies Assisted Living in Caledonia for their great care of Barb over the last year and a half.
A Celebration of Life will be postponed until summer 2021. Donations in memory of Barb can be made to Sparta Sports Boosters – Go Blue, PO Box 441, Sparta MI 49345 or Kindred Hospice-Grand Rapids, 625 Kenmoor Ave SE, STE 115, Grand Rapids MI 49546.
